There’s lots of amazing research going on and lots of cancers have really recovery rates now and many are now treatable. I think it’s impossible to know how long it will take as new types of cancers will emerge with time and also in some areas of cancer research, we know so so little about what’s going on that it will take years before we can develop good treatments.

Some types of cancer are difficult to treat because like bacteria, cancer cells can actually mutate to make certain drug treatments ineffective. I think the best way to cure it for good, if we ever can, is to get our own immune cells to target the cancer cells, and there are currently scientists working on this! Progress in cancer research over the past ten years though has been absolutely incredible! When I was younger I would have never thought that we could vaccinate against cancer, but for cervical cancer we now can, as its caused by a virus!

Not sure how long but I believe one day we will be able to cure most people. Currently some cancers are curable due to hard work of scientists and their research. Some kinds of cancer are still a challenge to treat and some people are unfortunately still dying as a result of this terrible disease. Nowadays there is loads of effort put to be able to design some medicines which would be used for a particular person’s cancer as every cancer is different as every human being is different – we are talking about personalised medicine. What is also important to mention and what scientists are working on now are effects of medicines after cancer treatment for people who had cancer. Some of this medicines and their effects are visible through rest of people’s life and it is important to design better treatment which would allow people not to have this bad effects when they do not have cancer any more.

As the others have said there is some great research going on, we are certainly in a much better position than we once were in tackling cancer. There is obviously a lot of work to do and scientists all over the world are tackling various different problems. I’m sure in the next few years we will see some big leaps in cancer research and perhaps one day be able to cure even some of the more aggressive forms. There is even some work that a few of my friends work on with using the immune system of the your body to fight of cancer (as Alice mentioned), really interesting stuff!
