This is a fantastic question, but quite hard to answer. I think all scientists would want their area of interest explored in more detail. I think generally we should concentrate on science that will benefit mankind and help the planet both from an applied and fundamental perspective! So, things like clean energy, disease and food poverty. I also think space travel is pretty cool too!!

I actually wished I’d done more biology. I’ve now moved into more biological questions so I’m always learning new things! I think you’ll never be able to explore all aspects of all sciences but I guess the answer to that is to always ask questions when you don’t understand something – there will always be someone who knows more than you about a topic.

Astronomy! I loved it at school but never really had any opportunities to pursue it further.

I agree with what Callum said, we’re all biased and so want our own fields that we are interested in to be explored. For me, it’s got to be materials physics, I think so much of our modern world hinges on this. It’s also important for us to strike a good balence between applied and fundamental research. It’s great to ask the big questions like how should we create a new type of battery but we also need to study far deeper questions like what do electrons do in this particular solid material? Knowledge is power and it’s important for this to be well-rounded.

I agree with Calum here. Any discoveries which would improve mankind and our life on earth I would proritise. any clean energy, any way of using the huge amount of garbagge we produce, anything which would prevent getting antibiotic resistance and appearence of superbugs would be of high priority for me. and also anything to protect wildlife and wild spaces on earth to keep this unique ecosystem working and the highest variety possible.
