I created materials that can detect explosive vapours…that is a neat experiment.

We made very thin films of fluorescent molecules (less than 100nm thick) and exposed them to explosives in the atmosphere. If an explosive was present the fluorescence disappeared rapidly. This gave us a very fast and selective method to test whether explosives are present which could be really useful in an airport.

I can’t think of anything in particular but the ones I enjoy the most are the ones that you’ve spent ages preparing for and it’s the final experiment you need to do before you get all the results. Then you just have to hope the results are good! It can be really annoying if it doesn’t work out but when it goes well, it’s the best feeling!
