Tough one, there are two trains of thoughts for science – knowledge and applications. You can only get to the application by pursuing knowledge, but you now need to justify the fundamental reasearch by saying there are applications as an end result. I work more in the knowledge camp, where I do a lot of work udnerstanding different types of materials. I specialise in carbon based things, where these are not well understood at the moment. My aim is to create carbon based materials that show very novel electrical and magnetic properties that could be used in devices like hard drives or small electronic components.

Great question, we are always trying to think about the impact our work might have on society.

So for me, our work can help in solar energy conversion, in the development of new electrical components from organic materials, in the development of new screen technologies (e.g. OLED and qLED) and in the development of new sensors for things like explosives.

Hopefully the enzyme I work on could be used in a pharmaceutical company in part of the scheme of reactions used to make a drug.
