A protein purification is where we isolate proteins which we have produced in a host organism so that we can study them. We do this by putting the gene for a protein in a plasmid and then forcing a host organism (such as E. coli) to produce the protein in large amounts. Then we crack the cells open, and isolate our protein! Then we can do all sorts of things with it!
