When I was at school we never did proper projects like you are doing now. School was orgniased a bit differently for me. One thing I remember was that once my physics teachers knowing my interests in medicine and biology, she asked me to prepare a lesson to all my class about impact of radiation on health and usage of radiation in medicine and science. I needed to read a lot to prepare myself but I loved it and my friends from school enjoyed it.

I did an extended project qualification (EPQ) when I was at College. We had to do some research and write a long report at the end of it. My project was all about liquid Helium and how it’s used in medicine, it was really fun and a great way to prepare for research after school!

The school system is a bit different in Scotland and so I didn’t go to college. I went to university directly from school…

The biggest project I did at university was my final year dissertation. It was a project looking to develop new materials for the detection of drugs of abuse. This was where I got my first experience of making single crystals and using X-ray diffraction to solve their structures…it was really fun.

I did a massive geography project where I decided to look at how different gravestones weathered in different locations. It may seem like a morbid subject but my friend and I had a right laugh. We got to go on a trip to London Highgate cemetry and I got my picture taken in front of Karl Marx’s gravestone. Now, I’m by no means a Marxist, but he had a great beard. We got loads of data and pictures and I actually did well; I got a good mark for my project once written up!

I did a science project at school where we dissolved 1p coins in nitric acid then figured out the percentage of copper in the coin from that using a variety of techniques. We then had to write it up at as a report, which I found really challenging but it was useful for when I got to university as I at least had some experience of scientific writing.
